V and 30,000 BigHead fasteners
The worlds biggest composite ship, the Mirabella V weighs 740 tonnes and measures 75 metres in length. Commissioned by US businessman Joe Vittoria, Mirabella V - with its single 90-metre tall mast carrying some 3000 square metres of sail - is a true silent giant of the seas. This remarkable vessel has been built by VT (formerly Vosper Thornycroft Shipbuilding) of Southampton, builders of large composite ships for over 30 years.
This unique and beautiful vessel - designed by Ron Holland, one of the worlds leading superyacht designers - can accommodate twelve passengers in truly luxurious surroundings. Mirabella V will shortly be available for Mediterranean and Caribbean charter at around $250,000 per week, complete with amenities such as a large wine cellar, jetskis, small sailing boats and a 29ft motor launch housed in its own onboard garage.
The last word in sailing technology, Mirabella V also incorporates over 31,000 stainless steel BigHead fasteners, in standard and non-standard versions and manufactured in five different lengths. These assemblies, each with its own barbed springclip (see illustration), were specified by VT for rapid and secure installation of the vessels complex thermal and acoustic insulation to the underside of its vast decking and internal bulkheads. Having been a customer for nearly as long as they have been building composite vessels, VT naturally turned to BigHead for a practical, robust and discreet fastening solution.
